Scavenger Hunts, Skill-Building, and Synergy: M+K Partners with DRB Homes on Learning Initiative

M+K has been partnering with DRB Homes on an educational initiative aimed at improving the understanding and application of structural drawings among personnel in DRB’s various divisions.

Targeting managers, field personnel, and purchasing teams, our seminars blend informative classroom presentations with hands-on field experiences. Participants engage in an interactive scavenger hunt at active job sites, allowing them to learn how to interpret and utilize structural drawings within a real-world construction context. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, prompting a formal request from DRB’s Vice President of Production for these seminars to be expanded across all divisions. Each session is tailored to address the unique structural drawing requirements of specific regions.

DRB and M+K employees bond following one of our seminars. Good times had by all!

This initiative not only enhances comprehension of structural drawings but also strengthens relationships among team members, facilitating smoother collaboration and proactive problem-solving in the field. By putting faces to names during our seminars, field managers feel more at ease reaching out with questions, helping to prevent costly mistakes before they arise.

DRB has been a valued client since 2013, and we are appreciative of opportunities like this that continue to develop our partnership.

Catching Up with Our Boston Office

Since opening the doors of our newest branch office over a year ago, we’ve made great strides in our goal to bring our unique brand of structural engineering to the New England Region from the heart of Boston.

Beginning with an award-winning direct mail campaign and some good old-fashioned phone calls and handshakes, client relationships began to emerge. Single family home projects quickly expanded to regions outside Boston and into neighboring states. Transforming customers into raving fans has always been at the heart of our mission at M+K, so we’re proud to have found repeat work with nearly all clients we worked with in 2023.

Going forward through 2024, our main objective of continued growth will be furthered with the addition of two employees to the office this summer. The new team members will provide the resources needed to help take on a greater quantity and variety of projects while building on the “work hard, play harder” culture that has made all of our offices such great places to work. With their sights set on all six New England states, we are very eager to see what’s next for the Boston office!

Women in Engineering at M+K

We’re very proud to showcase Mulhern+Kulp’s ‘Women in Engineering’ group, comprised of 12 members across our Philadelphia, Atlanta, and San Diego offices. WIE launched over two years ago in support of the diversity initiative from our 2020 strategic plan.

The Mission of WIE is “Retention, Community, Volunteering” with the goal to positively impact the work experience, careers, recruiting, and retention of female engineers at M+K. At its core, the group provides a community of support and mentorship for members to discuss topics and challenges unique to their experiences as women engineers.

Working in collaboration with the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), our WIE members presented ‘Introduce a Girl to Engineering’ at a high school in Marietta, GA, attended a SWE networking dinner at Villanova University, and participated in Habitat for Humanity’s ‘Women’s Build Day’ in San Diego.

In keeping with the spirit of Giving Back at M+K, the WIE group created a team to raise funds, promote, and participate in the nationwide Susan G. Komen ‘Walk for the Cure’ event on behalf of Breast Cancer Awareness month. A ‘Wear Pink Day’ fundraiser was staged at each of our offices which contributed to the overall achievement of raising $4,000+ in support of research and advocacy to combat breast cancer!

We’re looking forward to WIE’s continued positive contributions to M+K’s staff and culture, as well as their charitable efforts and their promotion of engineering as a great career opportunity for young women.

A Marketing Director’s Testimonial

My name is Rob Taylor, Marketing Director here at Mulhern+Kulp.

Initially, the bulk of my career was focused on strategic brand identity development and packaging design. I worked with multi-national corporations such as Procter & Gamble, Mattel, and Disney, among many others. I then started a consulting business, with the intent of bringing my consumer goods marketing experience to the business-to-business sector. This ultimately led me to M+K.

M+K was the first engineering firm I’d ever worked with. When I transitioned from consultant to full time employee about 7 years ago, I began the process of getting to know everyone. I must admit that, coming in, my view of engineers was shaped by stereotypes from TV, movies, and books – basically, introverted math nerds.

As time passed, I realized that M+K was anything but a monolith. Among our great employees is a published author, several musicians [some have published songs], a world traveler who has climbed Kilimanjaro [among other feats], talented golfers, basketball & soccer players, skiers, cyclists, a yoga teacher…I could go on!

Speaking of musicians, I don’t think there’s a better example of how interesting, diverse, and creative our staff is than the fact that we have an M+K Band! Members include multiple singers, guitarists, keyboardists, bass players, and a drummer who plays in jam bands [also a rabid Phish fan]!

The lesson for me is best summed up by the idiom ‘You can’t judge a book by its cover’. This truly is a great place to work, and we have 10+ years’ worth of workplace culture awards to back up that claim!

M+K Opens New Office in Boston

From hurricanes, nor-easters and intense inland winter storms, to thousands of miles of coastline buffeted by relentless ocean winds – building in New England can be a challenge. Whether we’re designing production homes, high-end custom homes, or multi-family buildings, our wide range of residential structural engineering experience transcends the environmental demands inherent to the region.

We’re known for our dedication to fast turn-around times, personal & responsive service, and a flexible, creative, engaged approach that yields innovative and practical solutions to complex problems. These qualities are valued by our great customers based in every region across the country, and we’re sure the folks in New England will love working with us too!

Our team is looking forward to building new relationships and bringing the unique M+K brand of structural engineering to the architects, builders, and developers in Boston and the entire New England Region.

M+K Places 2nd In National Marketing Competition

We’re excited to announce that M+K’s 20th Anniversary Branding Program placed 2nd in the Corporate Events category of The Zweig Group’s National Marketing Excellence Awards competition!

In preparation for the company-wide celebration last December, the marketing team developed a brand identity that was applied to a range of materials for the event. The centerpiece of this program was the invitation which featured the brand identity and introduced the venue to M+K employees.

The gala was held in Philadelphia at the venerable Franklin Institute, one of the nation’s oldest centers of science education and development in the United States. By all measures, it was a great night…certainly one for the ages!

The M+K marketing team is very proud of this recognition by our peers in the engineering, architecture, and building industries. As always, we look forward to the development of future projects that showcase our award-winning culture and the exceptional work that we do for our great clients.

M+K Celebrates its 20-Year Anniversary

Wow! Just, wow! On December 3rd, our employees and their spouses / significant others from all of our offices came together at Philadelphia’s iconic Franklin Institute to celebrate our 20-year anniversary. It’s hard to put into words how much fun we all had!

The Black-Tie event began with photos on the red carpet and cocktails & hors d’oeuvres in “The Brain” exhibit. We then transitioned to the rotunda to have dinner in the presence of the larger-than-life Benjamin Franklin statue. Throughout the evening several employees took time to look back and speak about their experiences at M+K. They painted a fun, informative and heartfelt picture of our first 20 years in business. The formal event closed with Mike and Joe presenting an inspiring vision of the future for the firm. With most employees spending the night at the 5-star Logan Hotel nearby on Franklin Square, we hosted a catered after-party there which provided a wonderful opportunity to continue the momentum!

It was such a joy bringing everyone together. This will be warmly remembered for years to come and will certainly have a home in the annals of M+K lore.

It is with a combination of pride and humility that we reflect on this achievement and look forward to the next 20 years. We’re grateful beyond words for the wonderful relationships we have built and the trust that both our employees and clients have placed us over the years. Going forward, we’re looking forward to continuing to earn that trust – and hope that we all continue to grow and succeed together.

M+K Wins National Marketing Award

We’re really excited to announce that our new brochure came in first place in its category in the 2021 Zweig Marketing Excellence national awards competition!

We live in a fast-paced, headline and caption world, so we wanted someone to be able to review this brochure in a minute or less and walk away with an understanding of our core competencies and what makes M+K tick.

Over the past several years we’ve been working hard to optimize our brand and to up our marketing game as part of our company wide strategic growth plan. While this piece is intended to support targeted business development nationally over the coming years, its primary purpose out of the gate was to bolster sales efforts on the West Coast concurrent with the opening of our office in San Diego early last Fall.

Our team is proud of the achievement, thankful for the award, and looking forward to future marketing projects. We truly aspire to achieve excellence in all aspects of our business, not just our engineering services and culture. Congrats to our Marketing Team!

M+K Ranks 3rd In National Awards Competition

We’re thrilled to announce we were just voted #3 ‘best structural engineering firm to work for’ in the nation by The Zweig Group! We’re extremely proud to consistently rank in the top 5 structural firms, with a #1 ranking in 2017. This isn’t possible without the passion and engagement of our awesome employees, in both the work we do and the social activities we enjoy.

Since the day we first opened our doors, establishing a fun and supportive workplace has been a top priority. Promoting an environment based on the notion of always doing the right thing – treating others with courtesy and kindness – is simply a reflection of who we are.

Creating an outstanding company culture has been critical to both attracting and retaining the best people in the business. Why? Because you need great people to provide great service! There’s no doubt that M+K employees are the best in the business.

M+K Marks a Milestone

It’s with a combination of excitement, humility, and pride – all on behalf of our fantastic employees – that we’re thrilled to announce the 20th anniversary of Mulhern+Kulp!

It all started with our passion for residential design and the dream to build a small consulting firm. Our vision was to deliver personalized service to each customer, tailored to meet their specific needs, and to create a great company culture that would attract and retain the best of the best. Genuinely caring about our customers and employees was, and still is, our core philosophy.

Thinking back, it’s hard to fathom how far we’ve come: From the beginning in our basement offices, soon followed by hiring our first employees (many are in senior management now), to the opening of offices in the Southeast and West Coast – it’s been quite a ride!!!

We’ve been blessed so much more than we ever could have imagined. We’re incredibly grateful for the wonderful relationships we have built and the trust that our customers have placed in our team over the years.

We could not be more excited about what the future may hold. Here’s to the next 20 years!

Mike + Joe
